The Region of Niagara is comprised of twelve municipalities in Southern Ontario. Each municipality represents a unique combination of agricultural, commercial, industrial, multi-residential, and hospitality opportunities. Over the next few months we will be presenting a market snapshot of significant areas within the Niagara Region.

Today we will be examining the last of the Niagara Region municipalities in my market snapot series, the Township of West Lincoln. Located in the central West end of Niagara, West Lincoln is border by Lincoln, Grimsby, Hamilton, Wainfleet and Pelham. It is made up of 22 communities and with Smithville at it’s administrative centre, West Lincoln has the largest geographical land base in Niagara. Main access to West Lincoln is through Highway 20. The townships moto is industry, progress, agriculture.

Agricultural industry strength

Agriculture is the townships number one economic driver, the majority of the lands within the West Lincoln were designed for agricultural purposes. The Townships looks to capitalize on its agriculture industry by promoting the community for agritourism.

The Township is taking steps to build its economic vitality, outlined in their 2012 strategic plan is the need to expand the economy by fostering entrepreneurship and attracting jobs in industries like alternative energy and environmental technologies. Steps to initiate this process include hiring a economic development officer to market the township. The Township currently supports the transportation, construction and building equipment contractor industries as well.

Residential expansion

The Township has become a small a commuter community and in response to this, Phelps Homes has developed/is developing three new residential communities. The Township is focused on redeveloping Smithville's commercial downtown core and surrounding amenities in order to continue to attract new residents.

Transportation nodes

While the township is not positioned along a major highway, they do have access to the following transportation network:

  • Highway 20 connecting Hamilton to Niagara Falls
  • Access to the QEW and i90 highways via Regional road 20
  • Hamilton’s Canada Pacific rail line
  • Close proximity to four airports and their subsequent distribution centres: Toronto International Airport, Hamilton International Airport, Buffalo-Niagara International Airport, and Niagara Falls International Airport
