High demand for Ontario craft cider leads to new Brock program

Owen Hughes

First it was the Niagara wine industry. Then, it was the Niagara craft beer industry. Now, there’s a new competitor in town: Ontario craft cider.

In fact, Niagara’s demand for craft cider has become so overwhelming, Brock University has created a program teaching its students how to make the fruity, distilled beverage. There’s no signs of the industry slowing down, which shows a promising future for the Ontario wine and brewing industry.

For The Love of Cider

In Ontario craft cider is soaring in popularity, as its taste is sweeter than wine, yet its carbonation levels are comparable to beer. The drink has become more trendy than ever, with a variety of different kinds now sold in the LCBO.

Before, options were limited to well-known brands from elsewhere in North America. However, Niagara is beginning to make a name for itself. Sales are rising and demand is increasing, and this increase is expected to grow within the next few years.

Fresh Niagara Cider on The Rise

The fruity distilled beverage grossed $7 million in Niagara in 2016, according to the LCBO. In Ontario, all craft cider sales have tripled overall within the last four years. When made in Niagara, the brewing companies use local fruit to create the fresh taste, creating a perfect year-round drink, but a guaranteed summer favourite.

Brock University

Brock University is now offering cider production courses through the Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute for students who wish to learn how to enter the growing industry. The course began last April, and since then it has flourished to attract people from all over the country. Additionally, this program is not simply limited to Brock students - industry professionals are also making the trip here to learn how to expand their business.

Demand for Alcoholic Drinks Fuels the Investment Appeal of Niagara

Niagara is already a major player in the country’s wine industry. Now, there are even more reasons to buy commercial property here in the region. The cider is made from local fruit, which provides economic growth to the region’s farms, while providing more ways to boost the tourism industry.

Thinking about investing in Niagara? The time is right!
