Tourism Snapshot: Jordan Village

jordan village tourist district

As a part of a new series, I will be providing a market snapshot of the numerous tourism districts located within the Niagara Region. Each district offers a variety of tourist, commercial and hospitality properties.

Today, we will look at the Jordan Village tourist district, located within the Town of Lincoln and the community of Jordan. The rural village is located within west Niagara's winery and agriculture belt, the village is bordered by Lake Ontario to the north, St. Catharines to the east, Pelham west and the Twenty Mile Creek to the west. Jordan is an hour drive from Toronto and a 45 minute drive from Buffalo, New York. The main commercial area of the village is located along Main St., but also includes a small section of King and 19th Streets. The village's unique winery, retail boutiques, museum and farm-to-table restaurants have made it a popular tourist destination.

History of the Jordan Village

The village was originally settled in the 1700's by a group of Mennonites. Using the Twenty Mile Creek, the area became a shipping centre, as well as a ship building centre. The area was and still is heavily agricultural and newly viticultural. The village's most notable attraction, the Jordan Historical Museum, was established on an acre of land in 1953 and is home to two of the area oldest buildings the Jordan School House and Fry House. The more modern boutique end of the village was established when Cave Spring Cellars opened its retail home in the village in the late 80's.

Tourist Attractions

Jordan's central tourist attractions are centred on wineries and agriculture, the Town of Lincoln as a whole has over 35 wineries. The community of Jordan specifically, is home to seven wineries, one which, Cave Spring Cellars, is located immediately in the villages tourist area.
