On Saturday, December 19th, Aduvo Inc. held an open house for Western Hill’s first ever shipping container home. I first wrote about the three-level home located at 15 1/2 Hillview Rd. in St. Catharines, back in July. Since July, the home has been fully realized and is now ready for occupancy.
The Aduvo Inc. designed home made up of five recycled corrugated steel shipping containers is completely unique to Niagara and to North America.
Composition of the shipping container home
Inspired by an English housing tract, the five container home is three storeys tall, 8 feet wide and 53 feet long home. The ground floor consists of one container at 40 feet long whereas the upper floors are constructed from two containers at 20 feet long each. In total, the interior space is 1,100 sq. ft.
In an effort to make the house visually appealing, the front half of the house features dark wood cladding and the back half features metal panels. The exterior is broken up by narrow side windows, and windows in the front and back are actually sliding patio windows with juliet balconies. A full balcony is accessible in the front of the house on the second floor.

Future Shipping Container Homes in St. Catharines
The open house was held to promote Aduvo Inc’s. dream of developing a shipping container complex near Queenston St. and the Welland Canal Parkway . The company has plans to submit a draft plan to the City of St. Catharines that would see a 50-60 unit shipping container apartment building. The units, which will be constructed from two side-by-side shipping containers, will be 640 sq. ft. each. The entire building will be three storeys.
