Retail nodes of St. Catharines: Lake St. and the Fairview Mall

Owen Hughes

The most dense retail cluster in the north end of St. Catharines surrounds the Fairview Mall and Lake St. While Lake St. represents smaller retail outlets, the Fairview Mall is anchored by a number of big box retailers. These areas are major service centres of the north end suburban population.

Fairview Mall St. Catharines

The Fairview Mall is located in the north end of St. Catharines in the Lancaster community. The mall's general boundaries are defined by Geneva St., the QEW and Lake St. The Fairview Mall was the first enclosed shopping centre in St. Catharines, costing $5 million to build and originally opened with 29 stores and 2,400 parking spots. In 1992 the mall expanded to include a Zehrs and 27,000 sq. ft. of cinema space (now Winners).  Big box stores including Costco, Petsmart, Staples and Home Depot have sprung up around the mall creating a large retail cluster.

Recent additions to the mall include a four store retail plaza on its northeast corner, near the LCBO outlet.

Lake St. St. Catharines

Lake St. in St. Catharines runs from Lake Ontario in the north until it connects with Ontario St. in downtown. The retail sections of Lake St. can loosely be defined by a cluster at the corner of Lakeshore and Lake and the largely commercial area between Linwell Road and Carlton St. The neighbourhood is an established area within St. Catharines with little to no room for expansion or development. The area is populated with commercial, retail and office properties with a mixture of stand alone buildings, strip plazas and car dealerships. The intersections at Scott St. and the North Service Rd. represent some of the highest traffic counts in the city.

Lake St. services substantial residential subdivisions and represents a major node in the city of St. Catharines. Westlake Plaza is the largest neighbourhood plaza along this section of Lake St.
