Pelham Community Centre Development On Time, Under Budget

Owen Hughes

Pelham has a population of approximately 17,000 and seems to be on the rise. With land values throughout the Niagara Region on a noticeable incline and the higher than normal market value for homes within the St.Catharines and surrounding area, it’s not surprising that families are purchasing homes in areas such as Pelham. Various developments are currently in the production phase throughout the Town of Pelham and there seems to be no sign of slowing down. This town’s growing population has also caused a demand for additional communal services, resulting in the brand new community centre facility that is being built.

Why the Sudden Interest in Pelham?

As many may have noticed, there has been a major spike in the housing market throughout major cities in Niagara over the last year. With housing prices on the rise and a reduction in the amount of available land

, it's no wonder many smaller towns in the Niagara Region are experiencing growth. Pelham is located approximately 25 min south of St.Catharines, not a very long commute for those who desire a larger bang for their buck when purchasing a home. For those who don’t mind the short drive to the city, they tend to receive more land for relatively the same price as they would pay for a home with less property in St.Catharines or Niagara Falls.

Status of the New Facility

For those who have moved or are considering the move to Pelham, the new community center will be a great feature for this booming town. This new facility will add to the town's communal services, allowing residents a place for extra curricular activities. A majority of the concrete has been poured and set. Crews are working on laying brick and completing the roof in the coming weeks before they start fireproofing and spray-foam installation. The goal is to have the exterior of the building complete by December of this year, allowing crews to finish the inside during the winter months.

Creating jobs in Niagara

Not only will this new community center create a place for residents to use for leisure activities, but it has added jobs within the Niagara Region. It has been noted that nearly 75 per cent of project duties have been given to local trades. Nine trades in Niagara have benefited from this new commercial development including; electrical and mechanical work, brickwork and masonry. In addition to the added jobs in the region, it has added money back into the economy. This local project has provided locals with the opportunity to work on a large project, rather than being given to companies from the GTA.

The new Pelham community center will not only add the amenities that this booming town has to offer residents, but it has contributed to the Niagara economy. Providing jobs to locals and increasing Niagara developments, this project has been a win for the Niagara Region.
