This week, I am continuing my look at the new tourism developments that are set to change and strengthen Niagara as a tourism destination.  Featured today is ever growing retail and winery tourism developments in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Niagara-on-the-Lake’s tourism industry may not be as strong as Niagara Falls but, it gains it’s uniqueness and status as the 7th most visited spot in Canada by offering exactly what Niagara Falls can not.

A wealth of attractions and festivals function to attract over 3 million tourists to the town each year. While the town has a number of well established tourism entities, a wave of new tourism investments continue to strengthen its appeal year-over-year.

Tourism in Niagara-on-the-Lake

Tourism in Niagara-on-the-Lake centres around the concept of Ontario’s prettiest town and a landscaped Niagara feel. This concept is complimented by a 19th century designed village, with a trend in upscale offerings and architecture. The tourism industry benefits from many wineries, breweries, retail shops, historical sites and entertainment pieces like the Shaw Festival. It’s no surprise then that the proposed tourism developments within the community centre around retail, beverage and excellence in accommodation.

For more information on the value of tourism properties with Niagara-on-the-Lake, I suggest you read one of my earlier blogs, in which I covered the growth in value of Niagara’s viniculture based lands.

New Developments in Niagara-on-the-Lake

Saks OFF 5th

The Outlet Collection at Niagara is getting another win, with popular discount retailers Saks OFF 5th set to open in spring of 2016.  The store will be 32,000 sq. ft. and sit at the main entrance of the outlet mall directly next to it’s eatery. The construction of Saks represents the second phase of the Outlet Mall which turned one in May of this year.

Wayne Gretzky Winery and Craft Distillery

This 15,000 sq. ft. facility will be built beside Trius Winery along Niagara Stone Rd. It will encompass vineyards, retail and tasting space, fermentation and barrel centres. The Gren Weis designed winery is slated to open in spring of  2017. Gretzky’s relocation to Niagara-on-the-Lake will bring new visitors who seek to visit a space on by the hockey legend.

Smaller developments of note:

Exchange Brewery

A new brewery is redeveloping the historical telephone exchange building at 7 Queen Street. The build will feature a manufacturing facility, tasting room and retail store for Queen St . The build is currently being described as a work in progress, but represents something new to the landscape of Niagara-on-the-Lakes old town.
