This week, I continue to look at the new tourism developments that are set to change and strengthen Niagara as a tourism destination.  Featured today is the sport tourism developments in Fort Erie.

Each year 1.8 million cars arrive to Canada via the Peace Bridge in Fort Erie, in yet the border town struggles to capture a healthy fraction of that tourism traffic. Most tourists move on to find their way to popular tourism destinations across Ontario including Niagara Falls, Toronto, Ottawa and Muskoka.

Developers, officials and residents are seeking to position Fort Erie as the next great Ontario destination. Fort Erie's tourism appeal has traditionally lied in the quality beaches, but with over $600 million announced in proposed development dollars, sports tourism is set to become the new “tourism ticket” for the city.

Tourism in Fort Erie

Tourism in Fort Erie has historically hinged on its beaches, particularly Crystal Beach, a tourism destination that has fallen in popularity since the closure of it’s infamous amusement park. The area still draws thousands throughout the summer months and has a thriving cottage industry.

Tourism attractions of note include, Historic Fort Erie, animal theme park Safari Niagara, a healthy rec and leisure culture, trail riding, annual summer festivals and the Fort Erie Race Track.

Surrounding Fort Erie Race Track Lands

The Fort Erie Race Track was established in 1897 and  in recent years has undergone a number of hardships. An announcement by new owners last month revealed promising news for the track. The owners plan to investment $280 million into the 338 acre property adjacent to the track. The development will include a proposed water park, hotel, residential apartments, RV park and retail space.

Canadian Motor Speedway

Proposed in 2007, the Canadian Motor Speedway (CMS) is a $400 million motorsport and entertainment development, complete with a speedway designed by Jeff Gordon. The CMS is currently moving through the municipal development process and is working with IBI Group architects on a site plan. The group remains steadfast that the facility will be completed in late 2017.  The CMS will make an estimated $430 million in economic impact and will create 1,100 jobs.
