New development in Niagara isn’t just for people, but pets too

Owen Hughes

In response to many new developments within the Niagara region and our quickly growing population, the demand for accommodation not just for people has increased. As the population grows, so do the number of pets in the city and that has resulted in a larger demand for dog parks.

In the coming weeks, the Niagara Falls city council is to work with the humane society and local residents to move forward a proposed off-leash dog park. The project is a partnership between the city and the Niagara Falls Humane Society, similar to the off-leash dog park at Fireman’s Park, which was a partnership between the municipality and the Stamford Centre Volunteer Firemen's Association.

Details on the project

The proposed off-leash dog park is to be located at the Niagara Falls Humane Society on the Chippawa Parkway. The Niagara Fall’s south end off-leash dog park will feature: two separate areas for small and large dogs, a trail in each off-leash area to assist with keeping feet dry, paved parking, landscaping with trees, public seating, and a water station for pets.

The Niagara Falls south side off-leash dog park is expected to be a year round park, allowing dog owners a place for their pets to be safely off-leash while in the company of other dogs.

Progression of the project

The Niagara Falls city council has approved $375,000 for the south end dog park in their 2017 budget and is expected to begin construction this coming fall. Once the project design has been finalized the city will be able to provide an expected open date for residents.

The city is expecting the project to undergo a few months of construction once the project begins. Negotiations with the humane society have begun and are in the final stage of settling the terms of the agreement that will set out each parties’ respective responsibilities.

Booming Niagara population increases need for space

We’ve seen some major growth to the Niagara region recently. There are many new residential developments being constructed, completed, and proposed to city councils frequently to accommodate the regional growth.

Within the Niagara region, there are currently dog parks in St.Catharines, Niagara Falls, Welland, and Pelham. With the constantly expanding population in the Niagara region, there has been a demand for additional locations where dog owners can safely bring their dogs to socialize with other dogs.
