In a previous blog, I spoke about the East Fonthill Secondary Plan, which is seeing residential and commercial developments in the Town of Pelham. Town-owned land along Rice Road and Highway 20 is being redeveloped to benefit the community and the economy. The Town of Pelham is currently considering the benefits of adding a hotel to the area. With a number of significant developments in the commercial sector proposed in the Secondary Plan, the area will see revitalization and could actively benefit from a hotel.

Complimenting other commercial developments

The proposed hotel would be built on town-owned land at Rice Road and Highway 20, near the community centre complex. The Town of Pelham hopes to attract a major hotel chain and put a call out for proposals in February 2015. A well-known hotel chain would instill confidence in the area. The hotel would be centrally located in the new development, near the future retirement facility, medical centre, community centre, and Wellspring Niagara (the cancer treatment facility).

Improving the economy of Pelham

With the addition of new commercial properties in the area, a hotel may prove to be financially viable. Whether people are in the area for a sports tournament in the community centre or visiting family, having the ability to stay within the newly developed town centre will be an appealing option. In order for the hotel to be successful, all components of the East Fonthill Secondary Plan will need to work together, attracting visitors and residents to the area, providing adequate facilities and services.

Attracting a business, such as a hotel, will help the Town of Pelham's economy expand. The East Fonthill Secondary Plan is representative of the town's commitment to enhancing Pelham's economy and determining what the town needs to foster growth.

The current status

As of March 2015, there is a study underway to determine whether the economic viability of a hotel development in Fonthill and if it would be of benefit to the area. The study was awarded to PKF Hospitality & Tourism Business Advisors during March 2015 and will be carried out over the next several months.
