balzacs

With the opening of Balzac's Coffee Rosters on July 1st followed shortly by four great days of Pan Am rowing and the introduction of the Port supper market, it feels like Port Dalhousie is finally getting some of the big wins it deserves.

News of confidence in the beach community started in January with Darryl Austin and Wolfgang Guembel's announcement to restore the 9 &15 Lock Street properties and introduce the Wellington. Balzac's opening is the first result of this development and it's helping to breathe life into Port Dalhousie.

Balzac's Coffee Roasters

Balzac's, an expanding Ontario chain opened in the historic 9 Lock Street building on July 1st. The building which had most recently operated as the sales office for Port Place, has been totally restored and infused with the eclectic feel of the Balzac's brand. The building was first constructed in 1907 and operated as the Sterling Bank of Canada. This appealed to Blazac's owner Diana Olsen as she has selected all 11 of her coffee chain locations based on their historical heritage. In order to undergo rennovations on the building, Austin and Guembel hired a Heritage consultant to ensure a true restoration.

The 15 Lock Street building is still under going renovations, you can read more about the plans for the Wellington in this blog.

Acqua Restaurant and Bar

Balzac's is not the only food and beverage operator with confidence in Port Dalhousie. Acqua has also opened along Lock Street in the former Marie's Seafood building. This building has been revamped as well, with a modern feel and two patio's that allow customers to enjoy the Port Dalhousie views. The Italian/mediterranean restaurant opened on May 6th and is a welcomed addition to the culture of Port.

Other Wins for Port Dalhousie

There are many local investors dedicated to revitalizing the community, the success of both the Pan Am Games and the Port Dalhousie Supper Market are key indicators that the residents of St. Catharines are ready to support those businesses opening too.

The two eateries are not the only wins for the community, the activities/developments below are also helping to breathe life into the community

  • Port Dalhousie Supper Market
  • Pan Am Games Improvements
  • Biggs and Barbeque (August)
  • Moonlight Flicks
  • The Beaches at Port Development
  • The Wellington
  • Paddleboard Rentals/Paddleboard Yoga

Port Place may be at a halt, but the rest of the businesses are pressing on and keeping Port Dalhousie alive. To discuss opportunities to invest in Niagara, connect with Niagara real estate appraiser.
