Today marks the annual World Facilities Management (FM) Day to celebrate the importance of the FM profession. It’s a Global FM initiative and has been established to recognize and raise the profile of facilities management around the globe, promoting facilities management’s ideals within the profession and industry, governments, and the general business community. Colliers International offers facilities management services across Canada so I thought it’d be great to post about why FM is important and what World Facilities Management Day entails.

Recognizing facilities management

Facilities management is needed to plan, maintain and manage facilities that organizations occupy. People have high expectations of their living, working, and leisure environments, and that’s why FM is critical for meeting demands. Exceptional facilities management can deliver flexibility, adaptability, and sustainability. FM helps organizations respond to cost pressures or the need for greater security.

One of the core competencies of a facilities professional is in systems understanding, which entails balancing reliability with criticality. Strong strategic leadership and technical competency are needed for mitigating upfront risk. Leveraging technologies is important for FM as complex buildings are increasingly adopting sophisticated technologies for communications and control.

World Facilities Management Day (WFMD)

The theme of this day is “empowering people for a productive world” and how facilities management professionals along with the FM sector contribute to businesses worldwide. Facilities management has the ability to enable different business disciplines to collaborate to deliver high-quality business performance. All over the world, facility managers are revolutionizing workplaces by influencing health, safety, productivity, and well-being of the people who utilize the built environment.

Planon, a leader in facilities management and real estate software, is celebrating World Facilities Management Day by offering professionals the opportunity to thank facility managers by sending them e-cards. They hope these will be effective in raising the profile of the FM profession, and allow individuals to recognize the achievements of the FMs in their organization over the past year.
